There was a lovely atmosphere in the Áras which lasted the day through. This event gave immense pleasure to our residents. It gave them an opportunity to celebrate our very special day, St. Patricks Day, whilst reminiscing about such occasions in days gone by. Scamp's visit added tremendously to this event – some residents spoke of pets they had whilst at home and reminisced on same.
This event was a great success and plans are already afoot for next years celebrations!!!!

St. Patricks Day in the Áras
Like all other celebrations, St. Patricks Day is a great reason to celebrate in the Áras! The day was cold but dry. Typical for Ireland! There was great excitement as members of staff dressed up in the Áras for the St. Patricks Day Parade which was being held in an Spidéal. At approx 11.30a.m. we headed for An Spidéal where the parade was due to start at 11.45a.m. Our float consisted of a very large homemade tin whistle and lots of tin whistle players (dressed in musician type rigouts!), all making lots of noise but very little music!! We were joined by relatives and friends and we were absolutely hrilled to win 1st prize for 'An Flóta is Greannmhaire' (The Funniest Float)! It's fair to say that we were absolutely delighted to win such a coveted prize! The parade was over at approx 1:00p.m. Whereupon we all headed back to the Áras. There was a lovely atmosphere in the Áras which lasted the day through. Ann Byrne (staff nurse extraordinaire!) entertained our residents in the downstairs sitting room, with the help of Matron and other staff members. They sang a collection of old Irish ballads and some even recited poetry. This event gave immense pleasure to our residents. It gave them an opportunity to celebrate our very special day, St. Patricks Day, whilst reminiscing about such occassions in the days gone by. This event was a great success and plans are already afoot for next year's celebrations!!!!
Like all other celebrations, St. Patricks Day is a great reason to celebrate in the Áras! The day was beautiful! Unusual for St. Patricks Day! It was decided that the Áras would not participate in the Spiddal Parade this year but instead would host a big celebration in the Áras to celebrate all things Gaelach. Prior to the celebrations, held in the upstairs sitting room, fresh shamrock and St Patricks Day hair slides were passed around to the residents. At approx. 2.30p.m., Róisín, Colm (John William Seoighe's grandchildren) and Micheál (their cousin) started off the celebrations with a wonderful concert. All three (very talented!) treated us to an array of sean-nós singing and dancing as well as tunes on the accordion, concertina, banjo and guitar. This was a truely wonderful occassion to celebrate our Patron Saint, St. Patrick. During the concert, members of staff mingled with residents and relatives and some staff even made an attempt to dance a few jigs!! This was treated to much applause as residents watched with great amusement! The music session lasted 1¼. After the session, residents were treated to a 'tipple' of their choosing, i.e. Baileys, sherry, wine, non-alcoholic beer, beer, orange juice, cranberry juice and water. We were then joined by Ann Byrne and Scamp for a Pet Therapy session. Ann's little doggy, Scamp, is only 6 months old and is a very small dog. Scamp was dressed in very fitting attire for the day that was in it – A lovely woollen coat adorned with a lovely St. Patricks Badge! There was much excitement and laughter when Scamp entered the upstairs sitting room. Ann brought him to all the residents and some asked to have Scamp placed on their laps. This was a wonderful end to a very special day of celebration!
A huge thank you to all involved in making the Halloween party such a memorable occasion again this year. It was especially great to hear the contribution of many residents to the evening's singing. Thanks as always to nurse/one-woman-music-sensation Ann Byrne, who really got the party going with her beautiful singing and great guitar playing. Thank you also to staff for getting into the spirit of things with their costumes.
